Recent events have lent fuel to the fires of racism, of hatred and fear. With such sustenance to feed upon, the darkest side of humanity begins to writhe up inside. The side that cries for self-preservation above all, the side that must point fingers and lay blame, the side that is willing to look at someone and judge them based on their appearance, the side that would be willing to hurt someone for nothing more than their differences…
I would beg my fellow humans to take a step back. Do not let that fear take control of the beautiful person I know you are.
Yes. There are bad people in this world, and they commit crimes against humanity. This is so.
However. Fear, anger and hatred do nothing but fuel the kind of nightmares that we watch on TV and THE ONLY THING that allowing those emotions to fester can possibly do – is bring us one step closer to becoming the very people, committing the very actions, that we so abhor. You cannot fight fire with fire, or fear with fear. If you truly wish to oppose the atrocities that rock our world, if you want to stand up for your country, if you want to protect our future; do not do it by spreading the fear. Or hate.
Let us take a moment to entertain a new perspective.
The last two minutes of this video were especially striking for me. If it is by the hatred and fear of others, that moderate Muslims find themselves pushed down the darker path — what other solution can there possibly be, than to show them, that they are in fact loved and accepted for who they are. What else will keep them strong?
Do you want your thoughtless, hate filled words to be the seed that results in an innocent Muslim child being beaten up in school? Do you want to feed the fires of these atrocities? Is that who you are? Are you one of THEM? One of those who revel in the pain and fear they cause?
If we go on blaming an entire race or religion for the criminal actions of a minority – there is not one among us who would be proclaimed innocent. I personally refuse to take the blame for any acts of hatred carried out by those who share the same origins or beliefs as I. I did not commit those crimes. I did not sanction them. I did not support them.
Rise above the darkness that threatens to swallow us all. Show the rest of the world what humanity is truly capable of. Be the peace, the love, the kindness and generosity that you would like to see around you. Put out the fires beginning in your backyard, and create a country, a people, a collective of souls that we can all be proud to be a part of. This is what will make us strong.
“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”
It is your choice. Will you be part of the solution? Or part of the problem?
